Masterfully told tales of the magic and mystery of gothic-era Central Europe

This is the mid-19th century Alsatian version of "local writers make good". Steeped in the lore of that region, the title story and it's companions exemplify the gothic mystique of central Europe and its uneasy relationship with modernity.
The stories themselves are a presented as courses in a feast, except this banquet starts with the main course.
The Man-Wolf is a novella-length pseudo-gothic tale of lycanthropy and sympathetic magic. Like a voodoo tale written 50 years before the first voodoo tale, it tells the tale of a cursed dynastic house.
The rest of the stories in the book range from merely very good to delightful and includes stories about miracles, dreams an inheritance, all told with warm insight into the traditions and characters who inhabit that part of the world
