About the Author
After receiving her MA in Music History and Literature at Arizona State University, Jean Ferris taught Music History and Appreciation at ASU. In addition to her work at the University, she has been involved with the music community by serving as a church choir director, singing with the Phoenix Symphony Chorale, playing the organ, and touring to Japan with her high school handbell choir--apparently the first handbell choir to perform in that country.
Ferris is the author of two books: Music: The Art of Listening and America's Musical Landscape.

Not a "BOX SET" as the description says....

This is listed as "paperback, box set" - it is NOT a box set!! How disappointing to open the package and find a book ONLY with NO CD's! The book itself was in great condition and exactly what I was looking for, but it was another $100 to get the CD's delivered overnight in order to complete an assignment.

Actually a really informative, in depth book. Not at all 'dry' or 'painfully academic'.
Be warned though:
The companion CD set is a ridiculously expensive bunch of clips. All examples can be found elsewhere, for much less than the CD collection itself. Just buy/rent the book alone.

Information Galore!

Very good book, with a lot of great information. Mine did not come with the CD, but all music was available through youtube.com. This is one of my 'keep' textbooks from my college experience.
