Good Learning or Reference Book

As a veteran substation automation and SCADA engineer, I was looking for something to deepen my knowledge of protective relaying schemes. This book is an excellent source of basic relaying information. It provides insights into all the major types of protection schemes, but I did find it a little weak when it comes to in-depth explanations. Its coverage of the new generation of microprocessor-based relays is pretty much a 30,000 ft overview of them, which is too bad, since they are the main form of relaying being deployed at present. Considering that it was published in its latest revision quite recently, I was diappointed by the lack of microprocessor-based relaying and the vast capabilities this new technology provides.

Older edition has errors!

The older version of this book has errors. I wrote the publisher and they are sending me a new, corrected version. Easiest way to tell is go to page 14, the Undervoltage Device is an ANSI 27 not 26. There are many more, though, including errors in formulas.
The publisher is GREAT to work with and were happy to give me the corrected book. They also have an errata sheet.
Overall, this has been the bible of the protective relaying industry for years since it was first published. A truely great book. But when it was updated from second ed. to third ed., it was totally re-keypunched and several errors resulted.
Last comment, the pictures are kinda grainy and need to be replaced.

Don't buy this edition

Terrible! full of mistakes. The original book is wonderful, but this edition is awful. I have been working relay protection for 19 years and purchased this text as a reference and as an aid in training the new technicians and was very dissapointed with this purchase. Buy the original or downloaad the Mason book.
