This retrospective recounting of tempestuous times, while being passionate and intense, is also suffused with an understated and wry humour which, in the words of Amartya Sen, demonstrates that seriously enlightening history can also be great fun to read .

About the Author
In the course of a long and distinguished career as a historian and academician, Tapan Raychaudhuri has been lecturer in Calcutta University, professor of economic history at the Delhi School of Economics, professor and chair of history at the University of Delhi, reader in modern South Asian history, Oxford University, and professorial fellow, St. Antony s College, Oxford. He was promoted to an ad hominem chair at Oxford from which post he retired in 1993 as professor of Indian history and civilization. He is now emeritus fellow, St. Antony s College, Oxford.

Instant Classic: Splendid, Superb !!!

This is a very important book for all Bengalis and Indians to read. For me, the experience has been almost surreal and deeply personal. My father is from Barisal and my mother from Comella ( now in Bangladesh). My father's family was ingloriously booted out from there by Muslims. They suffered hugely, they were never paid any compensation by Government of India, and as the author says, many of the refugees died on the streets. Bangladesh still doesn't have the courtesy to apologize for this disgusting ethic cleansing episode.
The dual catastrophe of Great Bengal Famine and the 1947 partition has had and is having a great affect on the economy (collective psyche ) of West Bengal. The apathy shown towards West Bengal by the Government of India didn't/doesn't help matters. On the other hand, The Punjabi ( Hindus and Sikhs) refugees from Pakistan were given all sorts of facilities that were criminally denied to Bengali Hindus.
This is a sad story but the writer is a great WIT, so your emotional response is so bittersweet.
A lovely book that must be read by all.
Very sad that nobody has reviewed this masterpiece.
